Administration of Your Medication (Vial)

Understanding Your Prescription

When reading your prescription, pay attention to the UNITS and schedule. The UNITS indicate how much medication you draw up in the syringe. Make sure you understand the schedule of medication, as the amount of UNITS you draw up may change after a certain number of weeks!

Important Note

GLP-1 medications can lead to rapid weight loss, which can also cause increased muscle loss. Muscle loss leads to decreased energy and metabolism and overall health reduction. Increasing protein intake and resistance/weight training is extremely important. Improving diet and exercise will be the key to additional weight loss alongside this medication, but will also prevent weight regain long-term when stopping this medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I administer my medication?

You can choose to administer your medication in your thigh or abdomen, as long as the area contains enough fat to safely inject the medication. Avoid injecting the medication into your muscles.

What are some side effects of this medication?

The most common side effect from these medications is nausea, as they work primarily in the stomach and gut region. You may experience other forms of stomach upset such as vomiting and diarrhea, but these side effects are much less common. Additionally, semaglutide has more pronounced side effects than tirzepatide, so you may experience more nausea if you are currently taking semaglutide.

Should I take my medication in the morning or evening? With or without food?

You can take this medication either in the morning or night without regard to food each week. Some patients prefer to take this medication in the evening to sleep off the nausea. It is preferred to take your medication at around the same time each week.

How does this medication work?

This medication works by suppressing your appetite at a molecular level. It disrupts signals that make you feel hungry. Through appetite suppression, patients lose weight as they are eating much less food.

When should I expect weight loss?

The weight loss depends on every patient. Some patients may be more sensitive to the medication and start losing weight immediately. Other patients may require higher dose to receive the full benefit of the medication, seeing weight loss closer to 3-4 weeks after starting the medication. It is important to remember that weight loss is a journey that is unique to every person.

How should I store my medication?

Store your medication in the refrigerator, and only take your medication out of its storage container when it is time to administer your medication. Avoid letting any children and pets get close to your medication. Additionally, store used syringes and needles in a designated sharps container labeled "Syringes." You can use an empty detergent container as a sharps container.

Diet & Nutrition Advice

For those aiming to shed pounds, aim for a minimum of 100 grams of protein per day. To be more specific, you can follow the recommendations below:

  • If 100-200 lbs, aim for 0.8 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight daily
  • (ex. 170 lbs x 0.8 = 136 grams)
  • If >200 lbs, aim for a minimum 150 grams of protein daily

This protein intake supports muscle maintenance and boosts metabolism, making it easier to achieve and sustain weight loss, while also enhancing satiety.

Additionally, boosting fiber intake and cutting back on inflammatory foods can significantly aid in weight loss. Fiber-rich foods, such as apples, pears, peaches, grapes, and berries help you feel fuller longer and support healthy digestion. Meanwhile, minimizing inflammatory foods, such as processed or refined foods, refined carbs, added sugar, or deep fried foods reduces excess calorie consumption and minimizes side effects like nausea, making it easier to create a calorie deficit and to tolerate the medication.

There are a number of foods that help regulate blood sugar to avoid sluggish effects of a GLP-1 medication. Ideally, aim for 3 to 4 servings a day of celery, cucumber, spinach, kale, asparagus, broccoli, or cauliflower. Theses foods may cause more gassiness due to a slowed digestive systems from the GLP-1. Decrease consumption of bananas, mangoes, oranges, kiwi as well as watermelon, pineapple, ripe bananas especially.
